Security standards, while providing objective means to ensure control, also constrain the options available for the engineering of solutions that are robust and scaleable. To ensure a successful implementation of a technology a clear understanding of the policies shaping the decisions is necessary. To this end using the development of a new VPN security policy delineating separation of access via three large categories is used to highlight the technical challenges and how they were overcome. The goal of the talk is to describe the translation of policy to active controls, the technical challenges and most importantly the communication and decision making methods used to create a secure and stable solution.
