It’s All Data: Records and Information Management, Information Technology and Higher Education in Virginia – The ODU Experience

Records Management is frequently mistaken for mere records retention, with its Information Management component often ignored. In addition to dealing with FERPA, HIPPA, PII, security and access in the recorded information of higher education institutions, college and university Information Technology departments in our state must deal with the Virginia Public Records Act in order to effectively manage all information holdings in all formats and locations – structured, unstructured, systems, applications, cloud, on-premises, and on and on.

Last year, Old Dominion University designed a five year plan and began its implementation with the start of Fiscal Year 2017. This presentation will examine the factors taken into account in the planning process and detail the core activities, targets and goals as the plan unfolds. Of particular note will be tools and activities that can be applied at all higher education facilities in Virginia.

Emphasis will be placed on demonstrating how ODU’s program is intended to be low maintenance and at the same time highly participatory.
